Employee Spotlight: Jonesboro Team

Posted on February 26, 2025 by Brittany Owens

At VSC Fire and Security, we take pride in the work we do – because when it matters most, our systems prove their value. A recent fire at NEA Mattress in Jonesboro, AR is a perfect example.

On January 24th, 2025, a light bulb above a row of mattresses popped, sending hot glass onto the flammable materials below. Starting a fire that could have been detrimental to the store’s assets and their storefront. Due to the sprinkler system our Jonesboro office installed in 2021; disaster was avoided.

By the time the fire department arrived, the fire was almost completely out. Four sprinkler heads were activated exactly as designed, keeping the flames from spreading and causing more damage. Both the fire department and business owner were impressed with how effective and efficient the system performed.

This success story is a testament to the skill and dedication of the VSC team. We would like to acknowledge Michael Oakes, Tony Patterson, and Alex Newcom for their exceptional work in designing and installing the system. We would also like to recognize the leadership of Tom Rigsby and Robert Quarnstrom in ensuring another job well done.

Meet the Team Behind the System

Michael OakesLead Sprinkler Designer
Michael has been with VSC since 2013. When he applied for the job, he chose VSC for the strong reputation we have in our industry. His favorite part of his job is seeing the team’s hard work come to life after completing a successful project. When asked about the NEA Mattress job, he noted that its success was due to applying the good design principles we do every day. This commitment to the integrity of the design is what gives our customers the confidence in their fire protection systems. Michael is continuing to grow in his role. Previously in his journey with VSC, he was a part of the team that won an Excellence in Construction Eagle from the Association of Builders and Construction Arkansas Chapter.

Outside of work, Michael enjoys gardening, listening to audiobooks, and visiting his favorite local restaurant, Mike’s Place.

Alex Newcom Sprinkler Fitter
Alex started with VSC eight years ago, after being encouraged by longtime mentor Tom Rigsby. At the time of the NEA Mattress job and the beginning of Alex’s career, he was an apprentice under Tony Patterson. He worked his way to being a skilled sprinkler fitter and now works as a Foreman. His proudest moment at VSC is earning his fitter’s license and continuing to develop his coordination and communications skills in the field. He is excited for his future at VSC because of the number of in-house opportunities to advance his career.

Outside of work, Alex enjoys spending time with his daughters, girlfriend, and playing video games.

Tony PattersonForeman
Tony has been a dedicated member of the team since March 12, 2003. He started as a helper and worked his way up to Foreman. He found VSC by the recommendation of a friend, who encouraged him to apply. Tony says, “It turned out to be one of the best decisions of his career.” He loves that his work makes an impact in saving people’s lives and property. When asked how VSC has impressed him over the years, Tony expressed that VSC takes care of its employees. Now that he is in a leadership position, the helpers never cease to surprise him. He has learned that one of his job’s greatest challenges is mentoring helpers and connecting with the younger generation.

The Supervisor’s Perspective

Tom Rigby, Field Superintendent, and Rob Quarnstrom, VP Division Manager, have worked closely with this team and have nothing but praise for their hard work and commitment to VSC and our customers. Tony has stepped up as a foreman, Alex has matured and developed strong communication skills, and Michael has gained extensive experience in design. They take pride in their work and embody VSC’s mission of exceeding our customers’ expectations by continuously improving our expertise, technology, and customer service.

Looking Ahead
The NEA Mattress is an excellent example of why fire protection matters. It highlights the importance of the work of skilled professionals like Michael, Tony, and Alex, who exceed expectations to ensure every system is installed to perfection.

We appreciate the Jonesboro Team for their dedication and hard work!
