Navy Federal Credit Union Renovation Project Update
Posted on October 10, 2025 by Lauren Milliman
Our VSC Springfield Division has been hard at work on the Navy Federal Credit Union Renovation project. This project is a 12-phase renovation project located at the Navy Federal Credit Union headquarters in Fairfax County, Virginia.
The project consisted of a 515,000 square-foot of renovation, including 4,600 sprinkler heads. Hensel Phelps was the general contractor on the project, and closely coordinated all work with VSC to meet NFCU expectations.
System design started in July 2023 and final inspections happened in September 2025. Work included adding and relocating existing systems for the first three phases, plus full demolition and replacement of the remaining systems due to the previous use of XL piping.
The entire NFCU headquarters complex remained operational during the renovation, which required precise phasing, shutdowns, deliveries (some of which needed to be placed on the roof), and overall cleanliness. In some areas such as the bank branch, the work took place after hours and the system needed to be operation during the next business day.
Special conditions on the project included a leveled cafeteria eating area requiring 69-foot articulating atrium lifts, and a large main entrance atrium with sprinklers running along glass framing. There were many areas with less than 6″ of above-ceiling clearance space for sprinkler piping.
All project schedule milestones were met at or before schedule requirements. VSC had an average of 4 to 6 field employees onsite at a time, with some months reaching up to 20 employees working on the three different phases concurrently.
VSC foreman Ron Delacruz and sprinkler fitter Baryan Alvarenga remained on the job from beginning to completion, and were the main team running the project with oversight form VSC Field Superintendent Derek Garcia. VSC designer Scott Gibson completed the BIM coordination, permit, and field drawings for the majority of the work, and also remained on the project through completion. The project was managed by VSC VP Division Manager Zachary Quick.
A special thank you to everyone involved with this project and to Hansel Phelps, NFCU, and the VSC Springfield team.
