The Value of Training and Certification Programs in the Fire Protection Trade

Posted on July 17, 2024 by Katie Meehan

Elevating Professional Standards with AFSA ITM Program and NICET Certification

At VSC Fire and Security, our well-trained professionals are the foundation of effective fire protection. Our quality craftsmanship is due in to our hardworking and dedicated employees and amplified by completing training and certification programs like the American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance (ITM) Program and the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) certification. Programs and certifications like these are essential for advancing careers and maintaining high standards in our field. We commend our employees who take the initiative and make the decision to invest in their career. This not only takes their skills to the next level but upholds the VSC commitment to quality craftsmanship, integrity, and reliability.

The AFSA ITM Program is designed to provide detailed knowledge and practical skills for fire sprinkler inspectors. This program covers various aspects of sprinkler systems, including installation, maintenance, and inspection procedures. Those who complete the program gain a thorough understanding of the NFPA 25 standards, which are critical for ensuring that fire sprinkler systems function correctly. We were honored to speak with Leslie Clounts, AFSA’s Vice President of Education Services, about the value of the ITM Program. She said, “AFSA’s ITM Inspector Development Program only works with commitment from both students and employers. So, it’s great to see the ongoing commitment that VSC demonstrates to their employees’ professional development from enrollment through graduation. The best part is getting to talk to or learn about a graduate who has advanced to more senior positions of trust and leadership. That has been a goal of this program from inception: to develop professional inspectors, not just train them.” We value the AFSA ITM Program because it equips our employees with the technical expertise needed to perform comprehensive inspections and maintenance for all our customers. This further safeguards the facilities we serve and maintains our customers’ trust in us for compliance and reliability.

Brenda Carter, one of our recent graduates of the ITM program gave a testament to her experience, “Working in the office all day, I do not get to see the technical aspects of the day-to-day work in this industry. The AFSA ITM program was extremely helpful in allowing me to grow and learn more about this industry. I cannot thank VSC enough for giving me this opportunity. I was able to learn and better understand the internal parts of fire sprinkler systems and why they are so important to life safety. The classes were spread out enough to easily study, prepare, and ask questions in my own time. I can now confidently discuss and answer questions to better help my team work more effectively.”

Another graduate, Stephen Simon, spoke about his experience in the program, “I joined the AFSA’s ITM Inspector Development Program in the Fall of 2016.  Very proud Group 2 Alumni! It is where I’d like to say my fire protection career got started. From the amazing instructors, classmates, hands on training and resourceful coursework, you will leave this program with a great understanding of the NFPA 25 ITM processes. I encourage anyone who may be interested in pursuing a career in NFPA25 ITM, to consider the AFSA’s ITM Inspector Development Program!”

We asked our Vice President of Inspections and Learning and Development, Jeff Lewis, his thoughts on the AFSA ITM Program, and he said, “The AFSA ITM program is hands down the best program we have used for the training and development of new inspectors. Combining classroom instruction from some of the best in the business and structured on-the-job training with our experienced inspectors is a winning formula.”

Another significant milestone for fire protection professionals is the NICET certification. Achieving this certification demonstrates a high level of competence and dedication to the field. The process involves rigorous testing on various topics, including system layout, installation, and inspection. For our team at VSC, the NICET certification is more than just a credential; it represents our commitment to excellence. Certified professionals bring added value to our services, ensuring that every project is handled with the highest level of expertise and attention to detail. This certification also opens doors for career advancement, allowing our employees to take on more complex and responsible roles within the company.

Investing in training and certification programs like the AFSA ITM Program and NICET certification is crucial for the growth of our employees and the success of our company. We offer extensive training opportunities, including a four-year apprenticeship leading to a journeyman card and various certification programs. By prioritizing these educational programs, we are committed to fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development. This commitment not only benefits our employees but also reinforces our reputation as a trusted partner in fire protection.
