This month we are excited to highlight Sergio Villarroel as the Employee Spotlight! Sergio joined VSC in March of 2024 and is an Integrated Systems Technician in Springfield, VA. We asked Sergio what drew him to VSC and he stated, “VSC offers many opportunities to learn and grow.”
In the past year and a half, Sergio has seen the company grow and change, really focusing on the importance of safety. He went on to expand, “which is great, because it shows that VSC cares a lot about its employees.”
Damin Proctor, Field Superintendent Integrated Systems and Sergio’s supervisor in Springfield, nominated Sergio for Employee Spotlight. He first met Sergio during his VSC interview. Right away, Damin noticed Sergio’s strong desire to learn and better himself. Damin also describes Sergio’s work ethic as “dependable, nonconfrontational and committed.”
Sergio takes pride in the work he does at every jobsite. Prior to VSC, Sergio worked retail and customer service jobs, which mainly offered part-time or temporary positions. “VSC offers the opportunity for an actual career where dedication and hard work pay off,” he said. We asked Sergio what his proudest achievement was since starting with VSC. “Being able to potentially save lives with the fire alarm work that I do,” he said. “Since starting with VSC, I have studied and received my NICET 1, and am starting to look towards NICET 2.”
Being an Integrated Systems Technician involves more than moving ladders and pulling wires. Sergio emphasizes the importance of being able to understand codes and reading prints. Damin notes how Sergio adds to the VSC culture by “always assisting other members of the team and always looking for a way to complete the project, not just follow directions.”
Damin remembers a time when Sergio thought outside the box on the job. “Instead of using an addressable module,” Damin said, “he used a conventional contact to make the system function accordingly.”
When Sergio is not with us on the job, you can find him catching up on episodes of “The Walking Dead,” playing video games or soccer, or eating at his favorite restaurant, Santinis. On his bucket list, he would like to go skydiving! We asked Sergio what the best advice he had ever been given was and he replied, “Focus on what you can control, and don’t waste energy on what you can’t.”
Sergio embodies commitment, craftsmanship and the strong desire to learn. We are fortunate to have him as a part of the VSC team and look forward to all he accomplishes in the years to come.
