Recently Gage Dittbrenner, Foreman and Matthew Benko, Helper were both presented their Level 1 AFSA Apprenticeship Certificates at our Virginia Beach Division. Their certificates were presented to them during a Safety Meeting by Ryan Craig, Sprinkler Service Manager.
This certification is a year-long process through the American Fire Sprinkler Association, which includes testing and field training. Gage and Matthew both completed the program virtually with live virtual instruction from industry experts, including testing and use of additional materials needed to complete the course. The Level 1 certification covers topics from safety, construction math and drawings, hand and power tools, and basic rigging. It also introduces the sprinkler industry, components of a sprinkler system, and various pipe and fitting types.
In addition to the live virtual lessons, Gage and Matthew were also required to maintain their self-study portion. This includes reading materials and resources like videos and articles. There are also assessments and tests throughout the program, where testing is monitored virtually.
This program combines formal training with on-the-job experience, where Gage and Matthew learned practical skills under the supervision of a foreman as well as VSC’s Ryan Craig, Sprinkler Service Manager. When chatting with Ryan Craig, he emphasized the importance of this certification and program as a whole. “This certification helps us make sure our employees are trained properly. They are learning fire code and safety, as well as NFPA 13 and other industry standards”.
AFSA’s programs are created by experts with the goal of enhancing the knowledge and skills of fire sprinkler professionals. Craig also noted how these programs help our employees grow withing their roles and even grow into elevated roles. “Gage and Matthew have really been showing initiative and growth. They want to do what it takes to develop their careers. These certifications are crucial for them to have the training needed to move into the next phase of their role”. We can’t wait to see what comes next for Gage and Matthew!
